EDIUS 5 EDIUS – Editing for the Digital Generation |
|
EDIUS – Editing for the Digital Generation EDIUS nonlinear editing software is designed for any broadcast and postproduction environments, especially those with newer, tapeless forms of video recording and storage. Perfect for file-based workflows, EDIUS software offers real-time, multi-track, mixed-format editing, compositing, chroma keying, titling, and timeline output capabilities. In addition to the standard formats of the EDIUS family, it supports Infinity™ JPEG 2000, DVCPRO, P2, VariCam, Ikegami GigaFlash, MXF, XDCAM, and XDCAM EX video. It also supports all DV and HDV cameras and decks. | |
What's New in EDIUS v5
This new release of EDIUS primarily aims to bring together the technologies for the various video formats available to editors today and tomorrow, within a more suite-like package that offers more than just basic video editing. This does not mean, however, that there aren't a few new and improved features included within the NLE software itself.
Windows Vista Support
Windows Vista Support
The driving force behind this release, EDIUS is now completely compatible with 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Microsoft's latest operating system. To make this happen, we have removed features that were previously incompatible, such as ProCoder Express for EDIUS and Xplode for EDIUS, and replaced them with brand
new components.
The support for Windows Vista also extends to current EDIUS hardware as well, making it possible for those who use our EDIUS NX and EDIUS SP NLE systems to make the switch to Windows Vista.

Unified and Expanded Video Format Support
The EDIUS Pro and EDIUS Broadcast packages have been combined into a single software solution, giving everyone the ability to work with the latest formats found in the video marketplace today. Whether you're importing, editing or exporting, EDIUS provides complete native support for the following:
Thomson Grass Valley™ Infinity JPEG 2000
Featuring specialized ingest tools for most of these formats, EDIUS ensures that you can import your media with the associated clip metadata, where available. EDIUS now also includes a generic MXF exporter, which expands your options of where you can deliver your finished video. The MXF container format provides play-out compatibility with not only Thomson Grass Valley K2 Media servers, but also other third-party servers as well.
In addition, the MXF exporter comes with FTP upload support, and makes full use of the renowned EDIUS segment encoding and multi-threaded encoding support for MPEG-2 data.
GPUfx – GPU Accelerated Video Transitions
With the departure of the old Xplode architecture, EDIUS now features a brand new collection of 2D and 3D video transitions for SD and HD productions. With 22 transition groups, and literally hundreds of presets out of the box, GPUfx are easy to apply, while providing complete key-frame controls over all the properties of the effects.

Best of all, GPUfx transitions make use of the power of your system's graphics card*, which will have you producing high quality 2D and 3D video transitions that require little to no rendering whatsoever! What makes the GPUfx visual effects package unique among its peers is that all computation and effect generation is done entirely in the YUV colorspace; from memory to CPU to GPU and back. Other solutions will flip between YUV and RGB when moving data between the CPU and the GPU.
GPUfx underlines the EDIUS philosophy of constantly preserving the integrity of your source's image quality with uncompromising real-time editing performance, when producing content for broadcast.
* GPUfx requires a graphics card with the proper level of 3D processing capabilities (Pixel Shader Model 3.0 or higher). Unsupported graphics cards will not be able to display GPUfx transitions used within a project.
New 'Built-in' Exporter Interface
While EDIUS has always maintained the ability to export projects to a wide variety of formats for distribution, much of this was performed via a plug-in to the ProCoder Express for EDIUS software application. This had limitations on both the speed and flexibility for export – features such as multi-threaded MPEG-2 export and batch exporting were unavailable.
This latest version of EDIUS replaces ProCoder Express, and instead gives you the full range of export options directly within the EDIUS file export interface, with complete control over transcoding, scaling, and frame rate conversion. Whether you're producing content for DVD, portable devices or YouTube, the new exporter is ready and waiting.
To make life easier, a large number of common presets are already supplied to help you get your project exported quicker. As with previous versions, you can create your own custom presets as you go along.
For users of ProCoder 3, you will still be able to use this as an exporter, courtesy of a free updated plug-in for the popular transcoding software.
Other Interface Improvements and Additions
Improved Video Layout Tool
The Video Layout Tool now features key-frame controls, to allow you to create custom panning and zooming effects to any clip on the timeline; both video and stills.

Clip Marker Support
You can now apply markers to clips, which will be retained during all edit operations. Clip markers can also be given specific text labels, and may be applied during clip capture. Clips that are captured as Canopus HQ will also retain clip marker information in any future project.
Clip marker support also includes recognition of P2 Shot Marker and XDCAM Essence Marker data.

Freeze Frame
This new option lets you set a simple freeze frame effect for any clip on the timeline. Simply position the edit cursor where you'd like your video clip to 'pause' and then choose this option. The remainder of the clip will be frozen in time, until it either reaches the end of the clip, or you set a new 'unfreeze' position.
ALE and FCL Batch Capture File Support
It's now possible for you to use Avid .ALE and Final Cut Pro .FCL batch capture log files when engaging the EDIUS batch capture interface.
Improved Native MPEG Editing
EDIUS has received further multi-threaded optimization when handling native MPEG content on the timeline. While it is always recommended that you use our Canopus HQ codec for the best possible real-time editing experience, those of you with contemporary multi-core CPU systems should receive a small boost in performance when using native MPEG-2 in your projects.
With MPEG-related improvements such as Segment Encoding, being introduced to EDIUS, you can now select MPEG as your chosen project renderer for projects that rely heavily on MPEG source material. MPEG clips can now be configured individually with regards to seek file creation and acceleration.
Quick Titler Improvements
This release gives Quick Titler some enhancements. You can now apply attribute and kerning settings to individual character, draw line and triangle objects, and position objects with the new layout grid. Roll and Crawl effects can now be applied via a right-click menu option.
Mouse-based Track Adjustment
Video, Audio and Title track heights and ordering can now be done by clicking and dragging with the mouse.
New Audio Level Controls
Sometimes you just want to adjust two adjoining 'rubberband' points with your audio key-frame – with this new release of EDIUS, you can. This new option will let you adjust the two closest key-frame points on either side of the edit cursor. Additionally, you can now quickly generate additional key-frame points at a prescribed interval.
Improved Project Consolidation
The Consolidate Project interface has been revised to make the task of archiving your projects easier, with the more descriptive drop-down option menu.
Improved Undo/Redo
Undo and Redo operations now record In/Out point settings and timeline edit cursor movements associated with any edit operation.
Color Range Adjustment
You can now toggle between white and super white color ranges to any clip on the timeline or in the Bin. This is particularly important with RGB-based material imported from compositing programs.
Bin Searching Improvements
Searching for clips in the Bin window has been made easier with the addition of a Quick Search filter bar. Simply press the F3 key and enter a search term. The clips that match the search term will appear as you type. This feature can be filter by clip names, clip comments, file names or reel names. Plus, it keeps a history of previous search words, for you to quickly switch to.
The traditional Bin searching feature now supports a larger range of category criteria to search from, with the option of using 'AND' and 'OR' modifiers. Build more complex search queries to generate more accurate search results.
